Our Impact in 2011
9 Jan 2012
In 2011, Concern Universal helped over 1.5 million people living in poverty improve their lives.
You can find the full report on our impact in 2011 here.
GREATER FOOD SECURITY & SUSTAINABLE
LIVELIHOODS
Over 150,000 people have now got
better access to food. They are growing more food at different
times of the year, to help them avoid ‘hungry
months’. The more they grow, they more they can sell
at market to generate an income for their
family.
- In the countries we work, as many as a third of all children are malnourished. In Bangladesh, the 10,000 families we assisted have more than doubled their monthly income, bringing them out of poverty and into profit.
IMPROVED HEALTH
Over 1.2 million people
have better health due to improving access to
safe water and sanitation,
improved healthcare and
nutrition, and action on HIV and
AIDS.
- In Guinea, we have been working with 100 communities in the Forest region. In 2007 we helped successfully eliminate Cholera outbreaks, and there have been no cases since then.
MORE RESPECT FOR RIGHTS
Around a quarter
of a million people have been empowered to claim
the basic rights they are entitled to.
- In Ghana, women have very few rights. By offering women the opportunity to generate an income and manage their assets, they have increased in confidence and received more respect from men in the country. At the start of January 2011, 108 women were elected to local government councils, and 7 women were elected to higher local government. This is three times as many women as areas where CU does not work.
BETTER SKILLS
Teaching new
skills to over 400,000 people has improved
communications, rights and
livelihoods. It has helped shape a positive future
for those living in poverty.
- If you can’t read, you could miss out on important information; how to look after yourself and your family, when the doctor will visit, or what the best price for the food you sell at market is. If you can’t write, you can’t communicate effectively to people who could influence your life. Thanks to our work in 2011, 2,679 people are now literate, giving them a brighter future.
REDUCED VULNERABILITY
Over a quarter of a
million people are now less prone to natural
hazards.
- Many of the people we work with live in areas feeling the impact of a changing climate. They live on marginal land that is susceptible to flooding, droughts and natural disasters. In 2011 we worked with 200,000 people to improve their resilience to these dramatic changes, from using flood resistant platforms, flood resilient sanitation, to mapping and training.
