Singing to save lives, Bangladesh
Parashmoni (pictured) is seven years old and loves to sing and play the harmonium. Her father Mr Selim wants to spread the word about disaster preparedness throughout his village on the coast of Bangladesh, and his daughter's passion for music inspired him to compose songs and poetry on this theme.
Concern Universal was working in Mr Selim’s village, to help communities prepare for, and reduce the risk of disasters. Mr Selim came forward to take part in a training programme. Before receiving training, Mr Selim thought that all one could do in the face of natural disasters was help the victims. Now, he is convinced that if his village is prepared, there will be no victims when the next cyclone strikes. “I will take every opportunity in the village to sing my songs with the assistance of Parashmoni until every villager knows them by memory. When the next cyclone comes, everyone will know what to do!”
Thanks to the commitment and dedication of community members like Mr Selim and his daughter and the support of the project, life-saving messages are spread, understood and remembered, and one day one of Mr Selim's songs may save someone's life.
